Unleash Your Inner Video Game Nerd at iam8bit’s 10th Anniversary Show
Against at least some odds, iam8bit, the Echo Park art gallery known for elevating and advocating video game art, has hung on for 10 years. Not that anyone’s mad about it—in the last decade, the versatile company and quintessential Los Angeles Slash (art gallery/production company/creative collective/don’t label us) has generated a visually rich series of programming and exhibitions that range from delightfully quirky (like “Chips, Crisps, and Wafers,” a potato chip pop-up featuring more than 50 flavors of chips from all over the world) to blissfully nostalgic (in 2013, “It’s the ShizNICK” celebrated all things Nickelodeon).
Having garnered attention for its trademark gaming showcases, its fitting that their 10th anniversary display, which debuted yesterday and runs through July 5, is a send up of “retro gaming memories.” The exhibition features the work of more than 100 artists who have immortalized classic video games—from Super Mario to Starfox to Sonic the Hedgehog—on canvasses (or elsewhere), so put down the controller, get off your couch, and head over to iam8bit for the perfect dose of weekend geekery.
